Advice for Separating Couples - bbl family law

1. If you are unsure whether your relationship will last, consider counselling (either together as a couple or as an individual).  Whilst not for everyone, exploring your situation with someone else can help making decisions about the future much easier.  If you do decide the relationship is over, counselling might help make the separation less painful.

2. Take legal advice early.  Even if you are unsure where your future lies its sensible to take advice so you know where you stand.

3. Who is supporting you?  Identify the friends and family members who you can rely on to help you though this time.

4. Begin to gather financial information.  It can save time and money if you familiarise yourself with the family finances from the outset.

5. To help make taking advice from us as efficient and cost effective as possible use our list of documents and complete the personal details forms before you meet us.

6. Try and maintain a dialogue with your partner.  We understand that sometimes this can be impossible, but it is likely to make the process smoother.

7. Try other methods of resolving arrangements, such as mediation or collaborative law.    Everyone is different and there is no one size fits all way of dealing with separation, and we encourage a flexible and creative approach to how we work with you.

8. When dealing with practical issues, leave the past alone and focus on the future.

9. Recognise that you and your spouse might be dealing with things at a different pace.  Be prepared to give each other time and space.

10. Finally, ensure you both use a lawyer who is a member of Resolution.  They will be committed to helping you resolve matters in a non-confrontational way.
